TDOT Reminds Motorists to Work with Us Move Over and Slow Down in Work Zones

National Work Zone Awareness Week April 26-30

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Transportation is joining states across the nation to ask motorists to Work with Us – move over and slow down for highway workers. TDOT will spread that message statewide during National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 26-30) to improve safety in Tennessee’s interstate and highway construction and maintenance work zones.

“It’s been five years since our TDOT family lost three employees struck and killed by passing motorists, and it’s still fresh in our memories,” TDOT Commissioner Clay Bright said. “Hundreds of TDOT employees are working on our highways each day. We need motorists to work with us by moving over and slowing down for TDOT workers or first responders working along our interstates and state routes. We ask drivers to pay attention to signs, observe the handsfree law, reduce your speed, and move over when possible.”

The spring and summer months provide perfect weather for highway work. Work zones include everything from major interstate widening projects to pothole patching and mowing. Motorists will encounter work zones across Tennessee in downtowns, along interstates, and in rural areas. Last year in Tennessee, 23 people died in work zone crashes, including workers, drivers, and passengers.

TDOT launched the Work with Us – Move Over, Slow Down safety campaign to help bring awareness to the importance of safety in work zones. To learn more about the campaign, see the answers to many frequently asked questions about work zones, and take the Work with Us pledge, click on the Work with Us link below.

Work zone safety messages will be displayed on TDOT’s overhead Dynamic Message Signs on interstates in Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville.  Prominent buildings and bridges will be lighted in orange, and “Work with Us – Move Over, Slow Down” signs will be posted at work zones across the state, displaying this message at various locations statewide.

This Wednesday, April 28th, is “wear orange day”. Please show your support for National Work Zone Awareness by wearing orange. Throughout this week, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as TDOT will be posting photos, infographics, and videos to broaden awareness of the importance of driving safe and undistracted, especially through work zones.

In 2020, there were 3,700 crashes in work zones on Tennessee roads. Do your part to keep yourself and TDOT road workers safe – set your GPS in advance and Know BEFORE You Go, secure your phone in a Hands-free device, and Work With Us by moving over and slowing down when you see vehicles with flashing lights.

Upcoming Asphalt Rejuvenation

CDOT is introducing a new pavement management technique called asphalt rejuvenation to our more newly paved streets throughout the city.  Being completed by contract, rejuvenation involves an application of a coating that extends the life of newly paved streets.  Because the rejuvenator extends the life of our paved surfaces, it means that we save money over time and have streets that retain their newer, high quality for longer before needing to be repaved again.  The application of the coating does require full access to our streets and limited use by the general public for a short period of time so we are notifying property owners, residents, and businesses in the affected areas of these upcoming short inconveniences while we perform this work.   This year we are performing this work on several dozen of the streets that have been paved with a recent paving contract.

The following roads will see contract crews performing rejuvenation on FRIDAY 4/9: Covington Street, Gentry Road, Guild Trail, Patten Chapel Road, S Seminole Drive, W 47th Street

The following roads will see contract crews performing rejuvenation on MONDAY 4/12:

10th Avenue, E 32nd Street, Howard Circle, Blanchard Street, Elder Street, Marlboro Avenue, Menlo Street, N Choctaw Drive
The schedule of this project is subject to change if inclement weather takes place.

Impending inclement winter weather

*Winter Storm Watch in areas shaded in blue

Ordinarily, I would not post about weather, but there is an approaching winter weather system which concerns me as a traffic reporter.

The above map shows all areas in Tennessee currently under a Winter Storm Watch through Tuesday.  The Watch area “could” be expanded to include areas such as the Chattanooga metro area. A Winter Storm Watch is issued by the National Weather Service when there is a possibility of heavy snow or potential of significant ice accumulations.  The watch is generally issued 12 to 48 hours before the storm’s arrival.

The difference of a few degrees determines if this will be an ice storm, or a cold rain.  33 degrees and we get a cold rain.  31 degrees and we get ice.  Chattanooga could see a cold rain, and 30 miles to the north or west could be on a sheet of ice.  Or the entire region could be on a sheet of ice.  Or the entire region could just receive a cold rain.  Or it could all mix together for a glorious “wintry mix.”  One of the above will happen.

First “event” is forecasted to be some point Monday into Tuesday.  There is potentially another “event” that would unfold later in the week, perhaps Thursday or Friday.

We have some awesome Meteorologists here in Chattanooga at “3”, “9”, and “12” who I imagine will be very busy over the next 72 hours trying to digest the computer model runs.

There is a Meteorologist out of Birmingham, Alabama by the name of James Spann.  He is, in my opinion, also among the best, most accurate in the Southeast.  Check him out on Facebook if you have a chance.  He covers the entire State of Alabama up to the Tennessee line.  Awesome info for our Alabama counties.

Chief Meteorologist Patrick Core at News 12 Now says Middle and Western Tennessee – Nashville and Memphis – will get hit “very hard” from this.  He says for anybody who has travel plans north or west next week, they should reconsider those plans.

Case in point: Be weather aware over the next 72+ hours. This “event” will inevitably create travel issues.

Once bitten, twice shy.  January 28, 2014, Atlanta, Georgia.  A date I will never forget.

As always, drivers are reminded to use all motorist information tools wisely and Know Before You Go! by checking travel conditions before leaving for your destination. Drivers should never tweet, text, or talk on a cell phone while behind the wheel.

In 2016, the Tennessee Department of Transportation lost three workers in the line of duty. All three were struck by passing motorists. Those tragedies bring the total number of TDOT lives lost to 112. We don’t want to lose another member of our TDOT family. We’re asking you to WORK WITH US.
