Nighttime Road Work On Germantown Road

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –As part of the bridge replacement project on I-24 over Germantown Road in Chattanooga, TDOT contract crews will begin nighttime pile driving operations for bridge foundations on Germantown Road near I-24 starting on Wednesday, May 20, 2020. Because pile driving operations will require Germantown Road to be reduced to one lane in each direction, the work will be done at night between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. EDT when traffic volume is less.

Nighttime pile driving operations will continue on a regular basis until the end of June, although there will be times where testing, preparation and weather interrupts the activity. Depending on how the pile driving operations progress, intermittent nighttime pile driving operations could be possible at this location until the beginning of August.

Pile driving, in this case, will involve the use of specialized machinery to hammer steel or concrete supports into the ground to form the foundation for the future bridges on this project. Driving piles is typically the loudest operation on a construction project with a repetitive steel-on-steel impact, so residents near the work zone will likely experience noise and disturbance while the piles are driven.

This work is being done as part of a project to replace bridges over and on I-24 near mile marker 183 in Chattanooga, including the bridge on Belvoir Avenue over I-24 and the bridges on I-24 over Germantown Road.

No Road Construction Delays For Memorial Day Travelers

NASHVILLE – Motorists won’t be delayed by road construction as they travel Tennessee’s highways this Memorial Day weekend. The Tennessee Department of Transportation will suspend all construction-related lane closures on interstates and state routes beginning at 12:00 noon on Friday, May 22 through 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26. This will provide maximum roadway capacity for motorists expected to travel in the state this Memorial Day weekend.

“Suspending construction-related lane closures during the Memorial Day weekend will lessen congestion and delays on Tennessee’s major highways,” said Commissioner Clay Bright. “We want to do our part to help everyone have an enjoyable and safe holiday weekend and keep traffic flowing as smoothly and efficiently as possible.”

Motorists may still encounter some lane closures or restrictions while traveling through long term construction projects. Drivers should be aware that reduced speed limits will be in effect in work zones. Drivers convicted of speeding through work zones where workers are present face a fine of up to $500, plus court fees and possible increased insurance premiums.

“We’re asking motorists to drive safely this Memorial Day weekend,” Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long said. “Though traffic has lessened, we continue to see speeding and distracted driving crashes. State Troopers will work to enforce traffic laws to reduce crashes and traffic fatalities across the state.”

As a result of COVID-19’s impact on travel, AAA advises that for the first time in 20 years, they will not issue a Memorial Day travel forecast this year.

Support For Local Restaurants And Retail Businesses

CDOT seeks to support restaurants and retail businesses through a recovery pilot program, SPROUTS, that will allow businesses to expand their footprints into the public right-of-way while waiving associated permit fees. Through SPROUTS, businesses can apply for a Temporary Loading Zone, for pick-up and delivery services, a Curb Lane Pedestrian Zone, to create wider sidewalks to provide pedestrians with room to access and lineup for services at a safe distance from other people, and finally an Outdoor Expansion Zone, that will temporarily allow businesses to expand their outdoor capacity to safely serve patrons while complying with the Governor’s executive orders as well as the CDC’s social distancing guidelines. Gas Prices Remain Low

With businesses slowly reopening across the Tennessee Valley, are you putting miles on your car again? Well, most people are and with that, the average price of a gallon of gas should help a bit. Today’s (5-11) average in Chattanooga is $1.71 / gallon which is higher than the statewide average of $1.60 but lower than the national average, which sits at $1.86 / gallon. If it makes you feel any better, the average price per gallon a year ago was significantly higher at $2.48. No. I didn’t think you’d feel better.
